PROMOTIONAL BOTTLE OPENER
This project was part of a second year module in Loughborough Design School. The project brief was to design a give-away promotional polymer product which would be fit for injection moulding. The end goal was then to design and detail the injection mould tool in order to be able to manufacture the polymer widget

I designed a promotional bottle opener that would promote a collaboration of Guinness and the Irish Rugby Football Union team. The widget would use a donor part from a bottle opener that would be encapsulated inside the widget during the injection moulding process.

The widget would be made from HDPE which allows the widget to be recycled or re-purposed at the end of its life. The mould tool will be made from a block of Aluminium and will be designed on SOLIDWORKS then cut out using a CNC router.
How to use the widget:

The block of aluminium is made up of two pieces which are 150mm long, 100mm wide and 25mm tall. The mould tool will have two 6mm diameter line up pins to make sure the mould doesn't move during the injection moulding process.

To create the exterior sharp edges of the widget I hand manufacture steel inserts to be inserted into the mould to allow the sharp edges to be formed when the mould is filled with plastic. The mould will need four inserts which will be held in place by 3mm pins. This will illuminate the chance of the inserts moving during the injection process.
